Workplace Safety Basics

Simple safety habits for every workplace, with practical tips for electronics workshops, warehouses and kitchens.

Safety is everyone’s job

You have the right to a safe workplace and a responsibility to work safely. Many accidents happen because of small shortcuts or hazards that nobody reported. Good habits from your first day protect you and the people around you.

Rules for every workplace

  • Attend your safety induction, and follow instructions and safety signs.
  • Use the protective equipment you are given, such as gloves, safety shoes, masks or goggles, and wear it correctly.
  • Know where the emergency exits, fire extinguishers and first-aid kit are, and where to gather in an emergency.
  • Keep walkways clear and clean up spills straight away.
  • Do not operate machines or equipment you have not been trained and authorised to use.
  • Report every hazard, injury or near miss, however small.
  • If something feels unsafe, stop and ask your supervisor.

Electronics workshops and assembly lines

  • Switch off and unplug equipment before opening or repairing it.
  • Use insulated tools, and never touch exposed wires.
  • Use anti-static wrist straps or mats where required, to protect sensitive components.
  • Keep a hot soldering iron in its stand, work in a well-ventilated area and wash your hands after handling solder.
  • Handle batteries carefully. Damaged or overheating batteries can catch fire.

Logistics and warehouses

  • Lift with your knees bent, your back straight and the load close to your body. Ask for help, or use a trolley, for heavy or awkward loads.
  • Stay in marked pedestrian areas and keep clear of forklifts and other moving vehicles.
  • Stack heavier items low, and never climb on racks.
  • Wear safety shoes, high-visibility vests and gloves as required.
  • If you deliver by two-wheeler, wear a helmet, follow traffic rules and do not use your phone while riding.

Kitchens and food service

  • Cut away from your body, carry knives pointing down and never try to catch a falling knife.
  • Use dry cloths or gloves to hold hot pans, and turn pan handles inward.
  • Never pour water on burning oil. Learn how to use the fire blanket and extinguisher.
  • If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off. Open windows and alert your supervisor immediately.
  • Wash your hands often, and keep raw and cooked food separate.

In an emergency

Stay calm, raise the alarm and follow your workplace’s emergency plan. Help others only if it is safe to do so. In India, you can dial 112 for emergency help.
