Nervous? That is normal
Almost everyone feels nervous on their first day. Your employer knows you are new and does not expect you to know everything. What they will notice is your attitude: whether you arrive on time, listen well and show that you are willing to learn.
The day before
- Confirm the details. Check your reporting time, the address and the name of the person you should meet, as given in your offer letter or by the employer.
- Plan your journey. Work out your route and how long it takes, and allow extra time for traffic.
- Prepare your clothes. Follow the dress code. If you are not sure, wear neat, formal clothes.
- Keep your documents ready. Carry your offer or appointment letter, ID proof, educational certificates, passport-size photographs and bank account details, along with photocopies. Bring your PAN card if you have one.
- Rest well. Charge your phone and get a good night’s sleep.
On the day
- Arrive early. Being a little early gives you time to settle in.
- Be polite to everyone. Greet the security guard and reception staff as courteously as you would greet your manager.
- Complete the joining formalities. You may fill in forms, receive an ID card and attend an induction. Read documents before you sign them, and ask if something is unclear.
- Learn names. Write down the names and roles of the people you meet.
- Listen and observe. Notice how work is done, how people talk to each other and what the rules are.
- Take notes. You will be given a lot of information, and notes help you remember it.
- Ask questions. It is far better to ask than to make an avoidable mistake.
- Follow the rules. Pay attention to safety instructions, phone policies and break timings.
Before you leave
Check with your supervisor about your timings and tasks for the next day, and thank the people who helped you.
After the first day
Spend a few minutes reviewing your notes, and write down any questions for the next day. Do not worry if everything is not clear yet. It takes time to settle into a new workplace.
The first few weeks
- Be punctual every day, not just on the first day.
- Be consistent and finish what you start.
- Ask for feedback and use it.
- If you make a mistake, own it and learn from it.
- Be patient. Confidence grows with practice.
