Screen Reader Access

Screen readers you can use with this portal, including free and built-in options, plus keyboard tips for moving around pages and forms.

About screen readers

A screen reader converts the text on a screen into speech or braille, helping people with visual impairments use computers and phones. This portal uses semantic headings, landmarks, text alternatives and full keyboard navigation to support commonly used screen readers.

Screen readers you can use

Free and built-in

  • NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access): a free, open-source screen reader for Windows.
  • Narrator: built into Windows.
  • VoiceOver: built into Apple devices, including Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.
  • TalkBack: built into Android phones and tablets.

Commercial

  • JAWS (Job Access With Speech): a widely used commercial screen reader for Windows.

If you need to download a screen reader, use only the developer’s official website.

Keyboard tips for this portal

  • Press Tab to move forward through links, buttons and form fields, and Shift + Tab to move back.
  • Press Tab after a page loads to reach the Skip to main content link, then press Enter to jump straight to the page content.
  • Press Enter to follow a link, and Enter or Space to press a button.
  • Press Space to tick or untick a checkbox, such as the consent box on our forms.
  • Use the arrow keys to move between radio buttons and between the options in a drop-down list.
  • The text-size (A-, A, A+) and high-contrast controls work with the keyboard like any other button.
  • On a Mac using Safari, turn on “Press Tab to highlight each item on a webpage” in Safari’s settings, or hold Option while pressing Tab.

Screen reader shortcuts

  • Headings: in NVDA and JAWS, press H to move to the next heading. In VoiceOver on a Mac, open the rotor with Control + Option + U and choose Headings.
  • Landmarks: press D in NVDA or R in JAWS to move between page regions, such as the main content and the footer.
  • Touch screens: with TalkBack or VoiceOver, swipe right or left to move between items and double-tap to activate one.

Tips for our forms

  • On the counselling booking form, choose the date first, then move to the time-slot options to hear the slots available for that date.
  • After submitting any form, note down the reference number you receive. You will need it, with your mobile number, to track your request.
