The golden rule
Never pay money to get a job. Genuine employers do not ask candidates to pay for registration, interviews, offer letters, uniforms, equipment or security deposits. If someone asks you to pay to secure a job, treat it as a serious warning sign.
Paying a course fee for training you have chosen is different from paying for a job. Even so, before paying any training provider, ask what the fee covers and get a proper receipt. Remember that no one can honestly guarantee you a job.
Red flags to watch for
- You are offered a job without an interview, or after a very short chat.
- The salary seems far too high for the work or your experience.
- You are pressured to decide or pay immediately.
- An email claims to be from a big company but comes from a free email address or an unofficial website.
- The message is full of spelling mistakes or vague about the job.
- The “recruiter” talks only on chat apps and will not share an office address.
- You are asked for your OTP, bank PIN or passwords, or to install a screen-sharing app.
- You are offered easy money for tasks such as liking videos or rating products, and later asked to “invest” to earn more.
- You are asked to receive money in your bank account and pass it on. This can make you part of a crime.
How to check an offer
- Visit the official website. Find it yourself and check its careers page for the job.
- Call the company directly. Use the phone number on its official website, not the one in the message.
- Check the email address. It should match the company’s official website.
- Meet safely. Go for interviews at a proper office during working hours, and tell your family where you are going.
- Ask someone you trust. A teacher, family member or our team can help.
If you have been cheated
- Report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call the cybercrime helpline 1930. These are India’s official channels for reporting cyber fraud. Report as quickly as possible, especially if you have lost money.
- Inform your bank immediately if money or bank details are involved.
- Keep evidence such as screenshots, messages, phone numbers and payment receipts.
- Be wary of anyone who offers to recover your money for a fee. That is often a second scam.
