Preparing for Job Interviews

How to prepare for a job interview, from researching the employer and practising answers to what to do on the day and afterwards.

Preparation builds confidence

Most interview nerves come from not knowing what to expect. Good preparation will not remove every butterfly, but it helps you walk in calm and ready.

Before the interview

  • Research the employer. Look at its official website to learn what it does, who its customers are and where it operates.
  • Understand the role. Read the job description carefully and think about how your training and skills match it.
  • Prepare your documents. Keep copies of your CV, certificates, mark sheets, ID proof and a few photographs in a clean folder.
  • Plan your journey. Know the address and how long it takes to get there. Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.
  • Get your clothes ready. Wear clean, ironed formal clothes and polished shoes, unless you are told otherwise.

Practise common questions

Practise your answers aloud, in front of a mirror or with a friend. Be ready for questions like these:

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. Why do you want this job?
  3. What do you know about our company?
  4. What are your strengths, and what are you working to improve?
  5. Why should we hire you?
  6. Are you comfortable with shifts, travel or weekend work?

When you talk about your experience, describe the situation, what you had to do, the action you took and the result. Real examples, even from college or training, are more convincing than general claims.

On the day

  • Switch your phone to silent before you go in.
  • Greet the interviewer politely and sit when invited.
  • Make eye contact, sit upright and listen to the whole question before answering.
  • Speak clearly in simple sentences. Confidence and clarity matter more than perfect English.
  • If you do not understand a question, politely ask for it to be repeated.
  • If you do not know an answer, say so honestly and show that you are willing to learn.

Phone and video interviews

Find a quiet place with good network coverage, charge your phone and test the app beforehand. For video calls, dress as you would in person, look at the camera and keep a plain background.

Ask your own questions

At the end, you can ask about daily responsibilities, on-the-job training or the next steps in the process. It is fine to ask about salary, timings and location once the role has been discussed.

After the interview

Thank the interviewer before you leave. If you do not hear back within the time they mentioned, a short, polite follow-up is fine. Not every interview leads to a job, so treat each one as practice and note what you could do better.
