Learning Online Effectively

Simple habits that help you learn well online, from setting up your space and planning your time to staying focused and asking for help.

Online learning works when you do

Online learning lets you study from home, at times that suit you, and replay lessons as often as you need. But without a teacher in the room, it is easy to fall behind. These habits will help you get the most from any online course.

Set yourself up

  • Device and data. Check that your phone or computer works with the course platform, and keep enough data and charge for each session.
  • A quiet place. Find a spot with few distractions. Earphones help in a busy home.
  • A notebook and pen. Writing things down helps you remember them better than just watching.

Plan your time

  • Fix a regular time to study, and treat it like a class you cannot miss.
  • Short sessions every day work better than one long session a week.
  • Set a small goal for each week, such as finishing a module or practising a skill.
  • Keep track of deadlines for assignments and assessments.

Be an active learner

  • Take notes in your own words.
  • Pause and replay the parts you did not understand.
  • Try every exercise yourself instead of only watching the demonstration.
  • Test yourself without looking at your notes.
  • Explain what you learnt to a friend or family member. Teaching is a good way to learn.

Stay focused

Turn off notifications from other apps, close unrelated tabs and keep social media for later. Take a short break between focused sessions to stretch and rest your eyes.

Take part

Join live sessions on time, answer when asked and use the chat or question time. Study groups with classmates can keep you motivated and help you solve problems together.

Look after yourself

Sit with good posture, look away from the screen regularly, drink water and get enough sleep. Learning is harder when you are tired.

Ask for help early

If you are stuck, do not wait until you have fallen far behind. Ask your trainer, a classmate or the course support team. SkillMan learners can also reach our Virtual Customer Care Cell for help and support.

Put your learning to use

The goal of any course is to be able to do something new. Practise your skills in real situations whenever you can, and keep a record of what you have learnt and the certificates you have earned.
